Please Help! Can't scale or rotate in side, top or front views!

Hello

I have just installed maya on my new laptop and I have a problem. In the views other than perspective, I can only move objects and not scale/rotate them. The scale manipulator appears as a gray line, and the rotate manipulator does not appear at all! Any suggestions?

delete the prefs folder in my documents/Maya
then reboot

that should fix it
