Are you using Windows Vista? That may be the source of the problem. Try unloading the AERO feature (will look more like XP) and try again. If it doesn’t work set the viewport to software instead Open GL or Direct3D.
Good luck.

- to use Software based viewports: I’m not sure because I use MAX, but it has to be in the preferences dialog.

- to unload Aero: Control Panel \ Personalization > Window color and appearance > choose Windows Vista Basic under “color scheme”. If this works you can edit the Maya’s executable to do this automatically when starting the program (very useful to free some resources too). Just right click over the executable > Compatibility tab > check “disable desktop composition”

Good luck.

I’ve had display problems which were caused by settings on my graphics card.  Maybe you have some kind of control centre software for your card.  Try playing with those.

My problem was different to yours but was resolved by changing the anti-aliasing settings.

I’ve no idea if changing settings will work for you, but it might be worth a try.

Also, what happens if you put an object in that blank part of the screen?  Does it disappear too?

looks to be the known (number of other threads) with Intel embedded graphics chipset.  In the Intel display properties there is a section for OpenGL settings, try changing the depth buffer to be 16 bit.  You’ll lose some precision but add the full viewport.  If so enter a bug with Intel on their graphic drivers

What would Aero have to do with this?  Ive been using Maya with Vista and Aero on for about 8 months and I’ve never had a problem with it.  Just uninstall then reinstall Maya, that usually works.
