Creating realistic cloud layer using fluids?

Read Duncans blog about volume displacement using fluids.

Interesting stuff, but i wonder is there a good technique for generating good looking clouds wrapped around, lets say a planet viewed from orbit?

Would it be possible to perhaps paint the attributes for the fluids and then set a state once its thick enough?.

Experimented with using standard cloud particles and have them emit at texture rate from a cloud texture, problem with using standard particles is that you need a ton of them to make any good results and it slows down the system a lot. And you don’t get any good impression of varying height as you would see in a orbital shot taken of earths cloud layer.

Here is a good example:

Perhaps it would be possible to assign Duncans technique as a texture to a sphere.

With the time it takes to render at that scale, I’d recommend rendering the clouds and then applying as a texture to the planet; less render time especially right there.  +1

I guess it really depends, are you going to be going into the atmosphere (i.e. spaceship out of clouds into space, vice versa) or do you just want a space shot?
