To get the boat to “rock” with the surface, I would use a simple 2 bone structure.

Place your boat where you want it on the surface. Draw 2 bones with a connecting joint between the two along the length of your boat.

Create 2 rivets (search for the rivet script) at the point of the surface at the 2 bone locations.

Point constrain each bone to the closest rivet for each.

Put the boat under the top bone.

Voila! Your boat is now “floating” with displacement.

hi..

what xsiv said is true. it’s a good method but a longer process.
instead, you could simply create two joints length matched to the boat. now create two boat locators for the start and end of the boat. parent constraint the joints to the relevant locators. now rigid bind the boat to the bone. it should tumble, turn and act as a buoy perfectly.
here the thing you should be careful about is, the way to animate and control the bone so as not to stretch but try to follow the other locator by making it as an IK or simply parenting(I tried this).

it worked with out a problem.

hope you don’t get confusing a lot.. reply if you are expecting more info.
