Multiple particle emitters?

Hi,
I have been learning how to do shatter explosions.  Everything works fine with the first emitter but when I try to add second emitter to create a different type of particle, I can not do it. when I click on the second particle in the outline, then go to the attribute editor the only particlecloud is the original, and if I change that it changes the original particles.  In other words the emitters mimick each other. Can you tell me how to create a separate emitter that works independantly?
