Sometimes, for whatever reason, the driver is not friendly with Maya.

First of all, do a search of your Program Files\Maya folder and your My Documents\Maya folder and see if you have more than one usersetup.mel file.

If you have more than one usersetup.mel, then you need to consolodate them into one file and make sure that the one that you end up using has the MagellanStartup; command in it.

The following was taken from the 3DConnexion forum.  These are instructions for doing a manual install of the 3DConnexion drivers for Maya.  Verify that you have the following files in the correct places.  Obviously replace “2009” with your current version:

1.Locate the 3dx plugin file 3DxMaya.mll for Maya 2009[default path is C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\win32\Maya2009 ] and copy it to your Maya “bin\plug-ins” directory. For a 64-bit PC, substitute 3DxMaya64 in the path.

2. Copy the melscripts from C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\scripts to the “scripts\startup” sub-directory of Maya

3. Copy the bitmap files from C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\icons to to the Maya “icons” directory

4. Copy the 3DxHelp directory from C:\Program Files\3Dconnexion\3Dconnexion 3DxSoftware\3DxMaya32\3DxHelp to the Maya “docs\ext” directory

Restart Maya. The usersetup.mel file loads the command MagellanStartup. As long as the 3Dconnexion driver is running, the MagellanStartup command enables 3Dnavigation . If the 3Dnavigation does not auto-start, you can type MagellanStartup at the Maya command prompt.

Another thing - if you have Maya Bonus Tools installed then you should search in there for usersetup.mel as well.  I had a problem before where Maya did not load MagellanStartup.mel even though I had it in my usersetup.mel file within Program Files/Maya/Scripts/Startup/.  I was certain that was the only usersetup.mel on my computer until I noticed that Bonus Tools had one in its own directory, and that’s the one Maya was using.  So I copied and pasted the contents of the Bonus Tools usersetup.mel into the Maya/Scripts/Startup/useretup.mel and then deleted the Bonus Tools one and then it worked!

If you don’t want to delete any of the extra usersetup.mel files then you can just rename their extension, for example: usersetup.xxxmel

Firstly thank you for the responses i took the advice but found that it didn’t work perhaps because i am on a mac? side note i tried running “MagellanStartup;"in the mel line when maya starts up. it worked the first time yet now im having no response.. any suggestions for a mac user?

Sorry, I don’t know of any specifics for Macs.  Have you tried contacting 3DConnexion directly?

You could try their technical support:

http://www.3dconnexion.com/service/technical-support.html

You could also try their discussion forums.  You can go here and choose the forum for your OS:

Ive been having problems ever since i upgrade the last two driver released in 2011. The most recent upgrades now displays that blueish circle when ever you use the 3d mouse in Maya. The problem is that whenever i try to go into a vertex, face or edge mode it quickly goes back to the object mode. It’s like i cant select any sub modes to manipulate the object. Any tips anyone ?

So you’re saying that as soon as you jump to a sub-object level (vertex, for example) Maya immediately reverts back up to the object level?

Are you sure this behavior is linked to the 3DConnexion driver?

If you change the “Rotation Center” options for the driver (try all combinations of “Auto” and “Use Selected Item” being on and off).

Have you tried uninstalling the driver and seeing if the behavior persists?

I recommend you start a new topic for your problem and supply the answers to my above questions in that new topic.

Pretty much yea, i did check with tech support and was instructed to uninstall and delete any registry keys left behind then reinstall. The problem still persist. I also did what you said and still nothing. I know this only started when i upgraded to versions 3.14 and 3.15. The problem only happens when the 3d mouse is active, when it’s not maya runs fine with no such issues.
