Make sure that your using OS X 10.6.2, if not, use “Software Update...” in the “Apple” menu.

Also, how much memory do you have in your iMac?  Should be at least 4Gb if not 8Gb.

Maya is still 32-bit on Mac - and will not see more than 4GB of ram total.

Everything runs decent on mine excepting when selecting.  I get the pinwheel a lot.  In Maya 2009 and 2010 on 10.5 my mac would freeze so I was told to upgrade to Snow Leopard.  I did, updated to 10.6.2 but the pinwheel still comes up when selecting.  Very slow.  Thinking about switching to Blender permanently.

I have exactly the same problem, it is very frustrating and takes a lot of time if you have to wait one or to seconds every time you select or deselect something!
Is there any fix for this?

I have this problem as well. Obviously a major and obscure problem, and this seems to be the only place it’s mentioned.

Hi, I have the same problem with my MAC PRO 2 * 2.26 Quad intel xeon… (slow selection)

I have the NVIDIA GT 120, does anyone has the ATI Radeon HD?, I wonder if it’s not the graphic card, it seems to not have been tested by Autodesk yet…

I did’nt have this proble when using maya 2009, only with 2010! Very annoying.

Thanks

I also had this problem…
I found that its snow leopard update problem…
I created new user and maya works like a charm…

I also have many other little problems because of update (skype hangs up once a day, can’t calibrate screen colors), so now i will move all my things to new user where all works nice…

I have found a workaround for the slow Maya issue. Maya chugging along and pinwheeling seems to only affect the account that is used to login when booting OSX. So to fix the issue do the following:

1. Set up a new account (System Preferences > Accounts)
2. Enable fast user switching so you can switch between account (System Preferences > Accounts > Login Options)
3. Use the secondary account when powering on the computer
4. Switch over to your main account and everything should work fine

Man, thanks for this blind shot!
Works perfectly… very stranger behavior, I mean… we have to keep two user accounts just to use Maya 2010 fine on Mac.
Ridiculous.
Autodesk shame on you.

P.S.:
iMac 9,1
C2D 3.06GHz, 4GB RAM 1067, GeForce GT130 512MB, 1TB HD, 24”.
OSX 10.5.8

[UPDATE]
Works only on the first time the new user account is created. Still showing the PinWheel of Death everytime I change tool, access a menu or whatever.
Autodesk shame on you 2.

OK so false alarm!

I posted before that I fixed the problem by deactivating the automatic GPU switch on my MBP, but it didn’t work. For some reason when I tried before it worked but now I opened Maya again and it has the same problem.

This is unacceptable.
