I currently run an early 2009 2.26 Octo Mac Pro with Snow Leopard (v10.6). I am looking to acquire Autodesk Maya and run it on this Mac.

Looking at the current version (Maya 2010) system requirements on the Autodesk website, it states that the 32 bit version is suitable for Windows Vista, XP or OSX 10.5.7. The 64 bit version is only available for Vista or XPx64.

Basically, as I understand it, v10.6 is currently too high a versin for Maya 2010 and various comments about issues with Maya under Snow Leopard on the forums corroborate this.

Does anybody have any recommendations on installing Maya. For example:

1. Would it be better to install XPx64 under Boot Camp? I’m reluctant to install Vista and Windows 7 isn’t currently supported under Boot Camp (nor Maya 2010).

2. Does anyone know if Autodesk are developing Maya to run under Snow Leopard on the 64 bit architecture?

3. Does anybody have any comments on general stability between the Windows and Mac versions?

Thanks.

I am also running MAYA 2009 on my MacPro tower. Works fine, but there are many tools and stuff that are downloadable only for the Windoze version. This sucks mightily. I am also considering running Windoze under Bootcamp so that I can run a Win version of MAYA, just to get around this. But without the Win 7 support I don’t know if I’ll do it. If I decide to go this route I’ll install Win XP, not Vista, as my experience with both in school running MAYA leads me to believe that the XP os is more stable and bug free.  But then I’m just a noob....  ;)

So I think the decision will be to wait.

Hopefully Autodesk will develop a 64bit version for Snow Leopard and if not their next 64bit version will certainly be Windows 7 compatiable and Apple will have released a Windows 7 compatiable version of Boot Camp by then (slated before Christmas).

Ah, yes, that is true but what year?  2011, 2012, 2013 oops thats right, there is no 2013 as all is ending in 2012.

I am currently running Maya2010 on a new MBP and on an older MacPro, both running SL.  Most things now appear to work fine sans an issue with backfaces on unlit surfaces.  I would not hold your breath for a 64bit version.  Who knows what is going on at AD anymore.
