Hi everyone,
I’m in quite a predicament and I hope for some advice from the forum.  I have a brand new Macbook Pro lap top which comes with Snow Leopard pre-installed.  There is no way to “downgrade” the OS. I’ve spoken with Apple directly.

I would like to partition the drive with boot camp and run Windows and a windows version of Maya.  Here are my questions:

Will Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit OEM install on a brand new Macbook Pro lap top (via boot camp)? AND-- will Maya 2008 work on this through a mac? If not, what version of Windows should I buy?  (My previous lap top is a five year old Powerbook G4 and I do NOT have access to a Windows machine. )

Also, I have read a lot about VM Fusion and I was wondering if anyone had success running Maya through that program? I realize it will be slow, but not having to restart the computer every time I need to switch programs, is very appealing. I just want to know if the program will work at all via Fusion and if it is worth purchasing for this purpose?

Please keep in mind that I do not know a lot about computer installation and I know absolutely nothing about computer programming. (Explain as if I’m a child!)

I’m very frustrated by all of this (as I’m sure many others are) and would really like some solutions.  I just want to get back to my work, you know?

thank you,

Griselda

Unless there are firmware issues with running Leopard on the latest Macs, I don’t know why it wouldn’t be possible.  What did Apple say about it?

I am pretty sure you could wipe the drive and install Leopard if you wanted to.  The other option would be to partition your drive or get an external drive and install Leopard on that to set up a dual boot arrangement until a fix comes in.  That is what i have done on my Mac Pro, but that is easier on a computer that allows multiple drives to begin with.

I have read rumors that OSX 10.6.2 will fix the problems ... I sure hope so.  Snow Leopard has been a huge nightmare for me.  I guess no early adoption for me anymore.

Not necessarily so.  Leopard may but also may not have the required drivers for his MBP.  If the correct drivers are not in Leopard and are required, which I’m sure that they would be, then the computer will have issues.  It is one thing to downgrade an older machine using hardware where drivers within Leopard existed.  It is another to downgrade new hardware which may not have drivers at all.  One of the nice things about Mac’s is proprietary hardware.  Most things just do work as advertised.  One of the bad things about Mac’s is proprietary hardware.  In cases like this there is no motivation or requirement for Apple to make drivers for old OS’s to run on new hardware.  Apple wants you to use Snow Leopard, not Leopard.

That may very well be, which is why I suggested an external drive or a partition.  I wouldn’t wipe the original drive.  However, what is the worst that can happen?  It doesn’t work?  With the low cost of external drives these days, I can’t see how it would be worth a try.  If all else fails, us the external drive or partition to set up a dual boot of Windows.

Reading back on my first post, I realized that I did not state that wiping the original drive was a bad idea in my opinion.  I am sorry about that. While you could try it, I would not as it would add a great deal of trouble switching back if things don’t work.  I should have been more clear about that.
