Hi everyone..

I’ve been having this problem with a scene for a couple of hours with no positive results; I click “render” a single frame but Maya reports: “Mental ray low on memory, aborting” and it stops. Now, I’ve been trying to set the BSP with no luck, can’t even get the necessary info in order to get the BSP right through diagnostics, cus they won’t render either. I’ve tried rendering a 320x240 frame and nothing… I’ve tried taking out geometry off of the scene and no luck. I’ve tried deleting textures since I have a couple of big textures and yet the same result… I have been dealing with this for an hour or so and I can’t solve it.

I’m running maya on a Mac Pro 8core Nehalem, w 16 GB ram and Dual nVidia Geforce GT 120, so I don’t think it’s a lack of hardware…

Anybody?! :)

UPDATE: if I batch render it works, i can’t render a frame though and I’m not done with the scene :(

Maya is still 32-bit on the Mac, so it’s gonna see a max of 4GB of RAM regardless of how much you actually have.

You’ll need to tune your render settings.

Thanks for the response!!!!

unfortunately, nothing has worked for me. I’m running out of hope with Maya/mental ray.
I know the app is 32 bits and I know Maya will only use 4 GB… but in a 16 GB system, with no other programs running, I’d guess maya for sure has those 4 GB for itself, yet Mental Ray is only allocating like 220 MBs… at least that’s what the output window says…

I’m really hating this thing and I’m switching application as soon as I get the chance… Can’t stand this maya/mental ray being so freaking unstable.

Anyway… Thanks a lot!!!!

What BSP settings have you tried?
What are you putting in for the memory limit?
Did you convert your texture to .map files?
Have you tried command-line rendering?

Can you post your render log?

BSP what i get from the diagnosis, can’t remember now since I’m not sitting on the computer right now.
memory limit it’s being 4096 MB (4 GB) for a 32 bits software.
didn’t convert to .map.
haven’t tried command line rendering.

The thing is, batch rendering works fine. It’s for the “preview current frame” that crashes.

one interesting thing though, is that the scene didn’t render before fishing all texturing, then started to render, once it was done it rendered a couple of times, then I restarted the computer and doesn’t want to render again.
