MR render spots

I am trying to figure out where i need to look to clear these patches of spotting. These are from a 300dpi 3000 px render. I am rendering with mental ray. with global illumination. I just can’t seem to find the right setting to clear this up and give me a smooth render. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!!

What are you lighting the scene with? Looks like you need to up the sampling quality for the light(s)…

Sorry i left out that detail. I have one area light from the front

Trying upping the sample settings in the Area Light attributes.

ok, the images have all the same render settings. The first one is the area light, use light shape, high samples 100, emit photons. The second is with a spot light with about the same settings except high samples is 10.

What are your ‘High Sample Limit’ and ‘Low Samples’ set at though?
They all need to be tweaked from the default ‘8 1 1’.

thank you for helping n8skow.

That was default. Based on your suggestion i have tried higher settings like 500-1-50, 1000-2-300. The attached image is 300,2,20

I don’t know why the area light would do this and not the spot.

Ok it has something to do with the depth map shadows. if i turn it to ray traced shadows it goes away.

Was about to ask that next… there are settings for smoothing depth map shadows - but if your cool with raytracing - good deal.

Those quality settings you were using were crazy high as well, I generally stick to multiples of 4 (e.g. 8, 16, 24, 32) 500 and 1000 are waaaaay too high…

Thank you for the help. I figured those where way high but i was guessing at things at that point. I don’t really have a preference for shadowing on this particular scene but may in the future. What settings would i be looking for if i switch back to depth map shadows?

You can soften depth-map shadows by increasing the filter size.

The advantage with raytraced shadows is you get the nice gradual blur the further the shadow is from the object, (you can do it with depthmaps with a bit of work)… but the performance difference over raytraced is pretty nice.
