I have a scene that’s has rendered nice in v2010. But since I moved to v2012 all my materials are rendering black. I’ve relinked them, still no correct render.

Strange thing is that I see the materials with hardware texturing on and that they render with the Maya Software renderer.

You can download the file here to check things out.

(I had to strip the file due copyright issues - I hope I didn’t erased to much)
I can send the complete file if needed. Please mail me.

I’m a beginner, so bear with me. I hope it’s a stupid thing ;-)

Thx for the help on this!

A few observations…

There is an error message in the script editor when rendering your scene in MentalRay:

// Warning: (Mayatomr.Scene) : output data type “rgba” not directly supported by image format jpg, conversion performed by mental ray //

Trying to track down what’s going on, but it seems to indicate there is an issue with the material and/or texture file…

You also have several MentalRay materials and nodes in the hypershade, these will not render correctly in Maya’s Software Renderer - so keep that in mind. The material you currently have applied to the ant (PaulHead_previzAnim_mt) is utilizing a MR node - even though the material is a Lambert.

Your running your material through a mip_raySwitch node - are you trying to split the render out into layers? Without that node attached, it seems to render correctly…

Thx for looking into it!
The file is from an external company and is being used in animation. I only have to pose and render things out. So I guess that’s way there are a lot of extra nodes and material in that scene.
You’r talking about the Switch node. I connect it the default way (MMB to ShadingEngine)
And that worked!

Is there a way to script this workflow since I have a lot of materials to adjust per scene?

Thx again!
