Thanks for the tip of the hat, Ben. When you’re as old as I am sometimes you get set in your ways. I only stopped carving images into my monitor with a chisel a couple of years ago.
The transparent light tint around the edges is probably antialiasing of the original image. If your transparency map is anything but completely white, you’ll get semi-transparent artifacts.

mental ray is not quirky, but it is very complex. You can get some great results if you understand how it works. It’s definitely not a push-button application.
