Buggy transparency on ivy leaves

Dabble with paintFX once in a while, but never seen this one.
paintFX ivy converted to polygons - and rendered in MentalRay.

Some of the leaves look like they should, but on the bottom half of the vines - the white background of the image file applied to the leaf geometry is clearly visible. What gives? Anyone seen this before?

For the time being, I’m just going to build a new mia_material and use the image alpha to drive the cutout channel, but would still like to understand what’s happening here…

I’ve realized that the area where the opacity is ‘broken’ is the area where I have a non-renderable dummy object to paint the paintFX on… hiding the object seems to have fixed my issue, though - is this a frame buffer issue with premultiply or something along those lines?
