I am trying to build the lights to a Toyota Camery and am trying to put the detail of the rear lights into a bump map instead of modeling it (Which would take forever not to mention would eat up alot of render time).  Is there a way to get the detail of these lights so that it manipulates the light that is behind them(Just like in real life) without having to model the detail?

Depending on how close your camera needs to be, you could try just creating a bump map.  Or else you could use a mental ray displacement if the bump isn’t good enough.  But bump will probably be fine…

What is the Mental ray displacement?  Which shader is that?

If you access an objects shading group, you can assign a displacement map to it.  If mental ray is the active renderer then it will calculate the displacement.  mental ray does a faster and better looking job of displacement than Maya’s software renderer.

A bump map does not create additional geometry, but a displacement does.  For this case, a bump map should work fine.  I just mentioned the displacement option in case you required the details to be physically modeled for close-up camera shots.
