I’ve got displacement maps from mudbox and they require really high subdivision at rendertime to look good.  It’s taking forever though.  Should I divide my geometry at render time or should I just stick a higher poly version of my object in the scene to improve render time?

Can you provide a little more information?  How many polygons is the Mudbox model vs. your Maya model?  Have you tried using mental ray displacement in Maya?  How long are these render times?
