What is the best method for creating frosted glass? I’m using Maya 2011 on a Mac Pro. Tried Mental Rays mia_material with the “Frosted Glass” preset with no luck.

Could you elaborate on why the mia_material preset didn’t work for you?

I’ll post a couple of screen grabs when I get into work on Thursday. In the mean time, is there any alternative or workflow I’m missing?

Oof course there is. You can build a blinn shader to get near identical results with

color: black
transparency: near white
specular color: black
refractions on
refractive index 1
mi refraction blur 1
refraction ray 8

and a bit of tuning here and there to match the look

but because there is something in your scene that makes the frosted preset for the mia_material not work, this will very likely not work either.

Here is my problem. Everything remains the same. I simply switch from the “Thin Glass” preset to the “Frosted Glass” preset. What gives ???

I would recreate frosted glass from the ground up. Using the presets means you have to go through and adjust the settings based on their defaults which requires a tad bit of hunting. There is a large sum of information on this material check this out http://download.autodesk.com/us/maya/2011help/index.html you will be creating frosted glass in no time! :P
