I am trying to create a really shiny gold texture to apply to a font.  I cannot figure out how to create this texture just through Maya without using any pictures from the web.  Does anyone know how to do this?!

Photo references are very handy for studying - so Google away.
Shiny materials need something to reflect, but usually produce blurred reflections and tint their reflections the same color as the surface.

At any rate, it would be helpful if you posted in image of what you’ve got so far so we know where to go from here…

hello
you can create a mia_material_x (mental ray node)
then select your diffuse color and select the reflected color the same as the diffuse one
then decrease the glossiness,.

Play with the options to see what works better for you

I hope this helps :)
