Tried searching but didn’t find anything on this.

I have a problem which affects me and my colleagues workflow a lot. I work with Maya 2009 Complete on Mac OS X 10.5. When I make a material and use a texture from an image file on the Mac and then my work colleague tries to open the file, the links to the texures doesn’t work, the material is missing the texture image.

The problem seems to be that the way Maya links to files is a definitive link for an example if on windows it will be something like C:/Projectfolder/images/image.png while on os x it would be Users/username/Projectfolder/images/image.png.

If you compare to how for an example the Adobe CS suite deals with links there’s no problem with working on two platforms there.

Is there a way to make Maya link to the files so it works on both platforms?

Store the image files in your Maya project directory instead of an arbitrary spot on the harddrive - or install Bonus Tools and use the ‘Change Texture Paths’ tool.
