I have been wondering if its possible to create realistic 3D works with just a colour map using realistic textures and faking details by shading or detailing the colour map itself and lightning by lightning certain parts of the colour map and using lambert or blinn material.I think for this to happen, one has to be an excellent texture artist. Is this possible?
For example, this guy is an excellent 2d artist that his works look like 3d.

I am sure colour map cahnnel will just be sufficient to get his 3d models looking this good,if he goes into 3D.

2d is a subset of 3d so you can do anything that you can do in 2d in 3d.
