Just for a project I grabbed this Lalique Belle Epoque dragonfly broach...it had a lot of really cool things in it I wanted to capture...I particularly wanted the enamel on gold on the long body and on the wings. But just selecting say the ovals on the body and then assigning them a car paint texture isn’t doing it for me at all. And doing the delicate enameling on the wings between the gold webbing won’t lend itself to that solution anyway…

I’m mostly uncertain how to have different materials, the shimmering gold and the richly lustrous irridescent turquoise enamel on top of the gold applied on a UV map. Is it even possible? And if so what materials are best suited to the tasks in Mental Ray.

I’m really not that interested in painting it in Mudbox itself; I know you can paint bump and specularlity there but the materials available there don’t match the ones available in Mental Ray..but if you know better educate me on it.

I’ll be converting the high res sculpture in Mudbox into a normal map to be assigned in Maya to the low res polygon mesh..
