Hello there

I’ve been working on an Audi Quattro for the past few weeks as a personal project in my spare time. I’ve learnt a log and so far the modelling has gone better than expected, and I’m quite proud of what I have achieved so far. Although the modelling isn’t finished yet, I wanted to add a few texturing details.

After learning a bit about UV mapping and the hypershade, I have a rough idea of how it works. However, as I found out you cannot UV map a nurbed object. However, you can project “decals” onto the texture.

So the first thing I wanted to be able to do was to project the Audi Logo on car door, just like the real car. I created the Audi logo in Photoshop. I exported it as a .tif with transparency. I’m not sure if I had to use a separate transparency map or what, I just removed the background and exported with alpha.

So back into Maya, I set up a layered shader with the top layer being the Audi Logo, and the layer behind that the red colour of the car. For the Audi Logo I set it to be a projection, and then aimed the little 3d cube at the car door. I can see the logo on the car door, however the alpha doesn’t work. It seems that the rest of the car is gray too, not the red colour I wanted. Can anyone help me with this?

I’ve been desperate to find out, I’ve purchased books and read through tutorials, but I fear I’m out of my depth. Even though it’s a seemingly simple thing I’m trying to do, I’m reaching a point where I just can’t do anymore, it’s very stressful.

I’d really appreciate any help anyone could offer, thank you. I’d just basically like to know I can project a a picture onto a car with an alpha. I’d also like to know if this works with images of full colour, not just black and white images. (All the tutorials are using black and white images).

Thank you ever so much, I’d really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Just in case you’re interested, I’ve attached a picture of the car.
