I am making a tree as part of my main project in my college course for Games Design and im having a little problem. I’ve made a tree and i’ve created branches using a plane with a texture and an alpha map. It looks fine normally, but then when i combine them all, the texture for the branches go from the normal dark green colour (see picture 1:) and change into a much lighter green colour (See Picture 2:) can anybody suggest what is going wrong??

When you say “combine” are you talking about the combine operation for geometry, or are you referring to some texturing work?  Do your renders also look different, or is it just in the viewport?

It’s possible that some of your normals were flipped when you did the combine operation.  Select your model and choose “Normals” - “Conform” from the “Polygons” menu set.  Does it make any difference when you do this?  You could also try “Normals” - “Reverse” after you have done the “Conform” operation just in case it makes them conform to all facing wrong direciton.

Sorry, not everything I typed was entered into my above post.  Weird.  Here’s what I intended to say…

It’s possible some of your normals were flipped around when you did the Combine operation.  Try seleting your model and the choose “Normals” --> “Conform” from the Polygons menu set.  After you conform them, then you might need to do “Normals” --> “Reverse” if it makes your normals face the wrong direction.

Also make sure you delete your history.

It would be good to make sure you have a backup copy of your project in case you need to recover from these troubleshooting steps.

okay i tried conforming, and then i tried the reversing, and then deleted history, none of that worked :(

Hmm… Are you able to zip and upload your scene and textures?  I’d like to take a closer look.  And perhaps someone else will be able to quickly find the problem.

I’m not able to open the .mb format for your version of Maya.  Can you save it as a .ma?
