well that’s weird because i combined it in your scene and it still did it

The scene I uploaded had the model already combined.  Did you try to combine it again?  Or are you saying you imported your model into my scene and then tried the combine?

When you opened my scene, did it appear correct initially?

Ah ha, I think I got it figured out.  Just to make sure we’re on the same page, I installed the trial version of 2011.  I love the new interface!  It seems that this issue is caused by how the Hardware Renderer deals with transparency maps.  When multiple objects are in front of or behind eachother (relative to the camera) the Hardware Renderer seems to work fine.  But when those objects are “Combined” into one mesh, then the Hardware Renderer seems to add their colors together.  See the attached video.  Sorry for the blurry quality.  It is too big to upload if I keep it at the original resolution.

To fix this, use something other than the Hardware Renderer.  When rendering, use either the Maya Software, or Mental Ray.  I recommend Mental Ray.  In the viewports, you can use the Viewport 2.0 or the Default Quality Rendering.  If you use “High Quality Rendering” in the viewports, then it uses the Hardware Renderer and you’ll have this problem.

There may be a setting somewhere to control how the Hardware Renderer deals with this scenerio, but I haven’t found it yet.

Bump.

Any ideas on the crashing? or could it just be low comp spec?

I’m not sure what could be causing the crashing.  Have you tried all the typical stuff like:

-Try creating a smaller scene with just a few objects and see if that renders
-Installing the latest video card driver
-Uninstall and reinstall Maya
