According to the Mudbox help docs, if you want to have vdm on a deforming mesh you should use absolute tangent as your vector space.

Come over to Maya, the Maya help docs say you shouldn’t use tangent, though the option is available. Tangent is one of three vector spaces, and there’s a separate field for a tangent map. There isn’t really any clear instructions on how to set them up, and nothing is giving me a good result. How are we supposed to set these up?

Never mind - looks like I was having a scale issue which was causing my problem. Map just plugs into the displacement value like it normally would, but my mudbox file is like 4 cm tall and my maya file is like 4 feet tall so the maps weren’t working as expected.

Nope that wasn’t it, but I found the problem.

The displacement shader had it’s displacement attribute plugged into the displacementShader attribute on the shader engine. To get the vector displacement to work, you have to break that connection and connect the vectorDisplacement to the displacementShader attribute.

Figured it all out. Chronicled my experience in our latest tutorial.

Thanks for this the info about the types of vdm maps was helpful.
