How do I apply a shader to two objects with two different UV mapping? For example, I want a cube with triplanar mapping and a sphere with spherical mapping but both having the same shader. In 3DS, the UVmapping is tied to the each object. Does Maya work in the same way? I get the impression that the UVmapping (Place3dTexture) in Maya is tied to the shader? Does this mean that I have to create two identical shaders but with different Place3dTexture?

It doesn’t sound like Place3dTexture is what you’re looking for. Each mesh will still have it’s own UV coordinates, just like in 3ds Max. To edit the UV’s you use Maya’s “UV Texture Editor”, not Place3dTexture.
