Hello all, and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I am wanting to get into MEL to help understand Maya better. But I want to start on a more basic level then just MEL, so my question is what Program/Scripting language would closest resemble MEL (also wanting to understand MaxScript too)? Ultimately I want to be able to rig more efficiently, troubleshoot problems, and work out new more efficient modeling methods

I know this is fairly open ended and there will likely be different answers, but I would like to hear peoples input! C++,JavaScript, Python, Ruby, whatever, I’m open to all suggestions, just give me a short answer as to why it would be the best (Likely syntax is virtually the same or something).

Thanks again!
I look forward to hearing your advice.

Hi Ben…

You know what?  I am in the same boat here and relatively new to MEL & Python although I have some experience in Programming.

I really wanted to get into it and got a Digital Tutors Introduction to MEL Tutorial and one on Python Scripting as well from their site and found them both really useful.

MEL seems the easiest to use and fairly intuitive (to me anyway) but Python seems to allow you to do more!

There are many sources on the Web that will help you in your quest.

Later…
