Hello:

I am in the process of switching from Max to Maya, and I am trying to find an equivalent tool to the Cap Borders on an Editable Poly in Max. I have a large hole in a polygon object surrounded by many edges, and the Fill Hole command does’nt fill the gap between them.

Thanks in advance,

Justin

Can you zip and upload your scene, or show some screenshots?  Fill Hole “should” work so something else may be wrong…

Attached is a screenshot of what I am talking about. The shape is a rough beginning to a model of a boot. I started with a single polygonal plane, then extruded the edges all the way around to make the outline. Then to close the shape, I snapped the end and begininng vertices together and merged them. The holes on each side are complex, but the FIll Hole Command doesn’t work on them. Also all vertices on the each side are aligned on the same plane.

you could grab all the edges around one side, extrude them in Z a little ways, then merge all the verts.  That would fill the whole, then you could just delete all the edges and make your own cuts.  If, for some reason, the extrude becomes crooked, you’d have to grab all the verts and snap them to the grid

It’s not clear from the image what the problem is.  I tried modeling the same thing in your image and had no problem using Fill Hole.  It is probably a topology problem.

Can you zip and upload your scene?

(1) Perhaps you have some duplicate vertices.  Choose “Display” --> “Heads Up Display” --> “Poly Count”.  Then select all the vertices in your model and verify how many vertices are selected.  Then choose “Edit Mesh” --> “Merge” option box.  Reset the tool settings and verify that “Always merge for two vertices” is selected.  Choose “Merge” and see if your vertex count has decreased.

(2) Perhaps you have some inconsistent normals.  Select your model and then choose “Display”—“Polygons” --> “Face Normals”.  Verify that all your normals are facing the same direction.  They should all be facing either inside or outside your model.

Preferably zip and upload your scene…
