Extract vs Separate?

What is the difference between Extract and Separate in Maya’s modeling set.

’Extract’ removes the selected polygons by duplicating the appropriate edges and vertices based on the selection.

The ‘Separate’ feature separates polygon shells within a polygon mesh into their own separate meshes. You would use ‘separate’ to break apart a model that has previously been merged together with the ‘combine’ command.
