Hello
I am a geologist. I would like to use MAYA software for 3D sub-surface modelling.

I am a very new user, just started using this software yesterday.

In this diagram, there will be 3D cube, and need to prepare a 3D cross section with Geological “Layers” inside it. I also need to draw drillhole plans (shapes like a cylinder) at specific angles within this 3D cube.

Is this possible with MAYA?

I would be helpful to you if you help me in this regards

Regards
Yask

Moved from Max2012. No idea if this is the right forum for it as there’s no indication of Maya version in the post.

Guys! Please help me! Have any of you use MAYA for the geological modelling? Can you suggest something else?
I am very new to this software.

Sorry to the moderators for putting this thread in a wrong section.

An example image of what your trying to make would probably spur more replies…

I think he means something like this:

geo01.jpg.

I’ve searched allot after tutorials on this subject since I’m in need of them myself, but I haven’t found a single one. How to create mountains and rivers with displacement maps without zbrush, terragen or any other application outside Maya except Photoshop and Illustrator would be great.
If you’re new to Maya, this isn’t something you create with a couple of clicks. There are many different areas to master before you could create something like the image above. Most of it is texturing with color and displacement.

I’ve actually chatted with Bill in the past on the creation of that image (and others) - it’s a fairly time consuming process, extending across multiple software packages. He uses a combination of DEMs created from scratch (in Photoshop) and satellite data purchased from the USGS.

That chat must have been interesting. I’d love to see a tutorial from Bill.
I made a quick test on painting a DEM or a displacement in photoshop for a mountain, it’s a long way from Bill but it’s a start. I want to make an easy and quick way to make mountains. The attached displacement took about 15 minutes to do and I think the result is ok for 15 minutes.
