Hi, sry for the title, but I don’t know what is the name of this think. Look at the attached screenshot. I’am modeling some spaceships and I want to do some track or only some fire, which is come from jets (as you can see on the image) but I don’t really know, if I can do that in Maya or if I have to you some other software. And if it is possible in Maya, how can I do that. Thanks for your help.

What will the final output be? Rendered animation? Or a game (real-time?)
In other words, are you wanting a dynamics/physics solution, or something faked with a shader effect?

Final output will be render and I think I don’t need dynamics. Something, which will looks like that on the picture, without any animation, only cone of light.

I’m a bit confused where you are stuck…
Your planning to just model the engine exhaust?
Is it the shader your having trouble with?

I simply don’t know the way, how to do that. For example if it is possible to do that only with model with special shader and how I can do this shader, or if it will be easier do this only with dynamics.

Well, you would create geometry in the shape of the exhaust - sorta a cone shape for each engine. Be sure to attach it to the ship so they move together.

For the material, try a ramp shader that fades from bright white to a bright blueish-white. What renderer do you plan to use? With the Maya Software Renderer, you can easily set the material to also glow…

Thank you very much. I hope this will be what I want. I think I will render with Maya Software, because I actually don’t have enough experiences with mental ray and there are lots of display errors and unwanted things. Glow can be set in a material settings?

You can find ‘glow’ under the ‘special effects’ section for the shader…
It’s somewhat limited, but should be useable for what your wanting to do.

If you use a surface shader for the material, you can tweak it a bit more.
