| How to select a Polygon when having multiple polygons in my scene?
|
|
|
Hello all. First of all I am new to Maya, only 4-5 hours of playing through the menu and I’ve stumbled upon a big issue for me. I can’t select polygons after I’ve deselected them, I can only right click- select all but that’s useless when I want to work on just 1 polygon. Maybe I’m messing up, can someone tell me how to select a polygon?
With NURBS, the “Select Tool” works just fine, but with Poly, nothing happens.
Thanks in advance!
Ray.

Usually you RMB on a poly object and select “Face” while holding down the right mouse button. Then you should be able to select (q) move (w) rotate (e) and scale (r) any polygon. It’s pretty much the same with vertices and edges too. Use RMB again to get back to object level.

I do not have the “face” option when I RMB, only Complete Tool and Select All… =(

Try pressing Q to enter selection mode. Complete tool indicates you started using some other tool and did not finish.

That does not work either...i hold Q, then LMB, a bunch of menus appear, tried clicking on all of the functions of that menu, then tried selecting, nothing happens, Hold Q + RMB- Complete Tool and Select All. Same problem..., and it’s really weird because I didn’t use some other tool, I’ve simply ran Maya, then I’ve made 3 polygons, then I’ve tried selecting one of them, and nothing works, so “Complete Tool” appears for no reason. (I guess...)
Is it possible that my HD 5830 (11.8 Ati Catalyst Drivers) would be guilty?
Here’s a video with my problem:

It sounds like a “selection mask” issue. It sounds like you have “Polygons” turned off, which means you can select any surface except polys. Rather than do a bunch of screen grabs and try to explain it, check out the “help” files and search for “Selection Masks”. This is topic # 338.
As far as the menus you get when you RMB-click - the RMB menu is context sensitive, meaning you’ll get a different menu depending on where you click. If you just RMB-click in empty space, you’ll see exactly what you did see - “Complete Tool” up top, and “Select All” down below. Try putting the cursor directly on your poly surface and RMB-click; you should get a marking menu with all sorts of components available to you.
I don’t think it’s a graphics card issue.

Hi Ray,
Did you figure it out yet? I noticed in your video that the selection masks look proper. The two things I’d try next are checking “Disable desktop composition” in the compatibility tab for the program’s shortcut and also resetting your preferences to defaults on the preferences menu inside Maya. Let us know how you fixed it, anyway.

PS> Also install the Service Pack 1 update. Never hurts.
