How can we select the faces that are in between an object or at the back of an object in maya 2010. I am able to select only the ones in front of the object(facing the camera)because of the way of selection(A face can obly be selected by clicking anywhere on it).

(In maya 8.5 faces could be selected using dots which appeared in the middle of the face and thus we could select any face by going into the wireframe mode and clicking on the desired dot.)

Any help would be good
Thanks in advance.

Question NOT clear, what do you mean by “BETWEEN AN OBJECT” ?

To select just the back ones or all including the back ones too ?

If you just need to select just the back ones, do the following: Rotate the view so the object is to the front of the camera and select face.

If you need to select all, do the following: In an empty area CLICK and DRAG over the object.

There are no faces in between an object [from how I understand the question].

Hope this is clear

I personally cannot stand the way Maya 2010 is set up to select faces - the “Preselection highlight” and “Select by Whole Face” are very distracting and difficult (at least for me) to deal with.  I go right to the Preferences, highlight the “Selection” settings, and turn all that off - I turn on “Select Face by Face Center”, which gives me those nice little blue dots for selection.

To prevent selection of back-faces, you can turn “backface culling” to on, or you can adjust your camera far clip plane.  I make a little slider to control that, so I can pull it up close to my view to block the back faces from view when I’m working in tight on forward detail.

Can you expand on the backface culling? I cant seem to get it to work. I currently have it “select face by face center”, turned on backface culling in pref/display/polygon. When I select drag a box around my model (which is a simple cube), the faces on the other side of the cube are still being selected.

I have read up abit about back face culling and it seems like it is viewport display thing and not a selection thing. Am I correct in saying this?

I have done further tests and it seems backfacing does work but something is strange.

I have a polygon model that is cube but with one edge bevelled (I will call this model 1). When I stumbled onto this thread I started to make the changes to the pref settings. This had no effect on model 1 ie when in wireframe mode the wires for the backfaces were still visible therefore selection was still possible. I therefore assumed backface didnt work.

I then modelled a new polygon cube (call this model 2) but the faceculling DID work on model 2. I then bevelled one of the edges to recreate the attributes of model 1. Facecullling remained working on model 2 even though it has the same attributes as model 1.

This makes me think maybe making the changes AFTER model 1 was completed didnt allow the faceculling to work? Is this possible or have a missed something? Have I changed some settings for model 1 without knowing which overrides a “new” pref settings?

The model 1 still remains un-cull-able.

For those interested....

I have finally figured out what has happened. When I made changes to the pref, the effect is applied to all objects after. Since I created model 1 before the changes, the backface culling didnt occur.

I also found under Display, Polygon, Custom Polygon Display (should display the same options has found in the pref) there is an option to affect all objects. By using this option, all my objects are no backface cullable.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

I hate it too. ;)
Thanks alot for that info about switching face selection back to the way it used to be!

Now that i have reverted the face selection back to how it was in 8.5, and have been using it for awhile, I notice that is not completely the same as 8.5.
Previously in 8.5 I could select edges/faces with the cursor arrow by having them targeted within the cursor ‘box’. Now with 2010 I find myself having to sometimes click 2 or 3 times in some cases when selecting an edge before I can actually select it.
It seems the target area for the cursor has been shrunk down to the size of the very tip of the cursor arrow.

Also i notice a row of new icons representing the commands in the drop down panels below View/shading/lighting/show/render/panels.
This row of icons is taking up real estate in the viewable working area.
Is there an option to have this removed completely instead of just clicking on the black ‘minimize to the left’ line?

I’m also interested in how to make this bar go away.  I like hitting ctrl space bar and making everything go away and having a glorious open space to do what I want.
