It could have something to do with the topology of your mesh - how you created your polygons.  If you don’t model with good clean 4-sided polygons then your smoothing operations may not work like you want them too.

It would help if you could show some screenshots of the problem…

Yeah, it looks like its an issue with your polygon topology.  You need to keep smothing in mind when you are modeling.  This topic has been raised many times on this forum.  Here are a few links to previous discussions…

Some of them are for 3ds Max, but the concepts are the same.  If you need more help, it would be good to zip and upload your scene for people to open on their own computers and examine your specific model.

Also, make sure you check out the links to other threads within the threads that I posted above.  It is a lot to read, but it will help you understand how “smoothing” behaves.

hey valen,

i apparently selected to have the object merged and then went to the smooth option, so now it works. Since I am a new user, and doing this just for fun, i really did not know what I was doing, but thank you for your help. It provided alot of insight with the topics you posted. I find it kind of hard though how you could make every single polygon be four sided, such as when modeling the ear for example. I guess I will learn as I go. Thanks for your help though.

Hello Adee, i’m also a new user.  I was stuck in the same problem, and this “step by step” Cleaning tutorial help me solve all my doubts, I hope it can help you too.  The Clean up tools and uses are one of the main problems for beginners, nevertheless Digital Tutors or Pro´s don’t have many videos (or hate to get in to it) that go through it completely, which I have complain many times.  Cleaning Geometry is one of the most essential steps on moving to medium level, this attachment explains it all.  GOOD LUCK
