Thanks for reading my post!
I’m Matthew from Indonesia and I am currently in my last year of the IB MYP programme (Year 10 of High School), and I am required to do a personal project. I have decided to create a virtual replica of the whole school (or at least a part of the school).
I have decided to use Maya since I am planning and looking forward to my Grade 11 project of creating a 3-minute cinematic of something and I would like to get extremely comfortable on using Maya. People told me to use 3ds Max or AutoCAD, but I personally think that the UI of Maya is more suitable for me.

This is the problem: I’m new to this thing and am currently taking a great risk of failing the create process of the design cycle because I am still an amateur (if not a noob) Maya user. Everything seems very hard to me, but I do want to keep learning because I’m thoroughly enjoying on doing this thing. So this is what I have come up with after a total of 24 hours of work: just the skeleton of 10% of the school building. The results are on the attached image (rendered in 1080p, one in Maya Hardware 2.0 for border clarity and one in Maya Software). I think the model can be improved quite substantially.

I am desperately requiring some help for this Personal Project, since I believe that I can work way faster than this if I know what to do. Therefore, please help me with some suggestions (and critiques) for my model, as well as tips for creating the product: which ones to do first for architecture (e.g. floors first, then rooms, then chairs); what to avoid; how to optimise working speed, and still many more I cannot think of.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me and I will respond as soon as I am able to.

Thank you so much for your help! If this thing works, I will post the project developments as well as the final result here!

All the best!

I don’t know how much or little you know but the duplicate with transform or duplicate special command will be a time saver for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJGF8dyf83A

I see you have some problems with normal direction on some surfaces, you should do a search on “normal direction”, “reverse normal” and “set normal to face”.

It looks like some of the objects are intersecting, that’s not good so you should solve that.
