This is driving me crazy!!  I don’t know how to fix it, and it’s making modeling frustrating.

1.  Select a Poly Object
2.  Go to the sub-component vertex mode of that object (screenshot “MovePivot1") and drag select a group of vertices
3.  Press “d” hotkey to move pivot point

What should happen is that the pivot point of the selected vertices stays at the epicenter of those selected vertices.  That’s what I want anyway.  Instead, pushing “d” moves the pivot point somewhere else on the screen (screenshot “MovePivot2").

I checked the Tools Setting for the Move/Rotate/Scale tools and Reset the tools and I still can’t get the pivot-point for any selected vertices of any object now to stay at the epicenter of those selected vertices when pressing “d”.  Pushing “d” always moves it somewhere else and it’s driving me fucking crazy.

Can you try ‘center pivot’ on the object before attempting to move the verts?

n8skow, thanks for your reply!

I did manage to figure things out on my own.

For a poly object, in vertex sub-object mode, and using the Move Transformation Tool, there is a history for the pivot of selected vertices that can be turned on or off by closing the yellow bulb (Maya calls it a circle) above the pivot point manipulator.

This is what I read in Maya Help.

Search Query in Maya Help: “Change the pivot point”

To keep the pivot in place while working with components
1) Press the Insert or Home key to show the pivot point manipulator.
2) Move the pivot point.
3) Click the circle at the top of the pivot point manipulator to lock or unlock the pivot point for component transformations. When the circle is filled, the pivot is locked.

If you are editing a mesh, while zoomed out, you will not see this bulb clearly.  [Image “PivotUnlocked”] Zooming in a bit will show the pivot point manipulator lock.  [Image “PivotLocked”]

The Maya Help file should really explain more.  It can be unbelievably frustrating to edit a mesh with this feature turned on and not know what’s happening, or even how to turn it off!  Restoring preferences to their default setting will also not fix this.
