problem with "make hole" tool and smoothing a polygon surface

sir i am learning modelling maya 2009 , i make a polygon cube and draw a plane over one of its faces , then i combine the mesh and use the make hole tool to cut the plane area over the cube face , if i hit 3 for smoothing then there is a crack in the surface of the face in which the make hole tool is used , pl tell me if there is a solution for this .

What you need to do is add resolution around the hole.
