Sorry for being a complete novice here but…

Maya was working great until a few minutes ago when all of a sudden it won’t let me select objects. Initially it was only in one particular project I was working on and now it is in everything I have done even a new scene with a simple Cube in it!

Example: I have a simple Poly CUBE (or indeed any Poly primitives) in the scene and I click to select it with the mouse and nothing happens - it stays default gray!

The ONLY way I can select the object is to hold down theRMB and I get 2 options - Complete Tool or Select All if I click - Select All then the object does highlight with ALL the Verts going Yellow.
If I then RMB I get the full expected Menu Selections and If I select FACES the lines turn Light Blue but I am unable to select any Faces.

If I click the Left Hand buttons for Select, Move, Rotate or Scale (or use their Keyboard Shortcuts) nothing happens - I get no Manipulators on the screen at all.

If I click on VERTEX - the Vertices all go Purple but once again I cannot select anything.

Maya has also shut down prematurely a few times but I’m not so sure that this is necessarily related - as I said it has been working great up until today.

It really is the strangest behaviour I have ever seen and I am sure that it is something relatively easy.
I would prefer not to have to delete my prefs folder and start over as I have made some custom menus, shelves and MEL Scripts BUT if I have to reset or re-initialise Maya - OK but is there any other way of doing it without loosing my settings?

I have looked through my Preferences and everything seems as it should be…

I have checked online to no avail!!

Help me Maya Experts - You’re my only hope...!!!

Thanks for that.

I did reset my Prefs but same thing happened again.

Currently uninstalling and reinstalling to see if that will help…

Later…

Problem sorted...A complete re-install was required but now everything is back the way it should.

Ah...the joys of computers!!!

it is very easy to accidentally hit a hot-key that will put maya into a specific mode without you realizing it. It is also possible to accidently hit a hotkey that will toggle some preference that persists from scene to scene and between maya sessions.

when these types of situations come up, i look at the Statis Line. Its the row of icons above the shelf. Check the “Lock Selection” icon, if you accidentally turn this on it will prevent you from selecting anything else. Also, double-check the current selection mask by looking at which icons are enabled in the Status Line - Hierarchy, Object or Component.

Thanks for that...I was still having a few problems from time to time and couldn’t figure out what it was…
