Show Manipulator?

Anyone knows how to activate the show manipulator tool in Maya 2010? I am using it on a mac, and for some reason nothing happens when I choose the show manipulator, even when I have an input selected (for example, makeSphere.. )

No it doesn’t.. Really strange, the object appears selected , but I can’t do anything to it, and the manipulator itself around the object isn’t visible either. Thanks though..
