Hi-

I am running Maya 7 (I know it’s ancient!) ... I am trying to use the surface sampler to transfer the normal map of a high poly model onto a low poly version and I keep getting these really weird artifacts in the normal map. I’ve looked around on the internet for hours, and I’ve tried a variety of different experiments with different settings, but to no avail. The most frustrating and mystifying thing is that even when I try different settings, I still get the same results. I’m pretty much in the dark about this, but I also know that it’s probably something very simple that I’m missing.

I’m also getting something very similar when I try to transfer an ambient occlusion map as well.

Here is the link to what the ambient occlusion map looks like: bake.jpg ... I’ve circled the problem areas I’m referring to in red.

And here is the link to the normal map problem: gun-experiment.jpg ...

Both maps are from different models that I was trying to work with. My UVs are laid out cleanly and do not overlap.

Honestly I have questioned my sanity in the past couple of months with this, so any help at all would be immensely appreciated! Again, I’m sure it’s something simple....

Thanks!
Bob Wirtz
