hello everyone,
i´m trying to get smooth shading into a simple model but it isn´t working. as you can see at the pictures there are strange edges on the surface. i´ve tried alot of different thinks to get rid of that problem.
what I´ve tried (all with different settings):
- rotate vertex normals
- different combinations of “soften edge” or “average normals” on different selections of the model
- include more vertices around the tricky edges
- using the “average vertices” function from the “mesh” menu.
thats not the first simple model i´ve tried to built in maya where this strange shading occurs.
i hope someone have an idea or a trick to fix that.

I get that from time to time. It is because not all the polygons are coplanar… that is, not all the points are (in this case) at the same point in Y, so there is some ripple in the surface.
I wish I knew an easy, automated way to fix this (so I could do it faster myself). But it can be fixed by making the polygons all at the same height.
I always either select a vertex (along the edge of the affected area), then right click and choose “Object Mode” and then the move tool and carefully move the vertex while watching the shading, or select the vertex and go to an orthographic view (side or front) and go to wireframe and try to line it up with all the rest of the vertices.

thx Wesley Howe for your reply,
there is a way to set the xyz coords for vertices at one time.
under “window” > “general editors” > “component editor” > “polygons” you can see all coords of your selected vertices. just drag&drop all of the numbers in f.e. “y” and type a new coord into the last selected field and all vertices will have the new coords.
in my case a few vertices wheren´t at the same y-height but it still doesn´t make a nice shading after lining them up :(
