In Maya 2009 almost everytime I extrude I have to merge the foundation verts of the new face to the old surface verts. How do I avoid this in the future? I end up spending most of my time fixing the model by merging the verts instead of painting or sculpting the model. Any advice?

Hi, make sure “keep faces together” is selected.
