Got my download and installed Maya 2010.  Not had much chance to do anything with it but right off the bat the new license manager is “interesting”.  Before, with my standalone license I could install to my desktop and my laptop, which is all I really need.  Now with 2010, you can install to your desktop and your laptop but you only have one license.  If you need to go mobile, you must move your license with a new app called the License Transfer Utility.  Have not tried it yet but I can see that could be a bit of a hassle if I happen to forget to do a xfer before I leave with my laptop. On the flip side, (I need to read the fine print in the details to see if this is allowed) but what it could allow is for me to install to a windows or linux desktop and xfer to that machine to run.  That might be handy in a bind or to investigate a different platform without the hassle of getting a temp license.  Fired up Toxik and MatchMover and both run.  On a Mac, which is what I have, Toxik takes over the whole screen, your dock is gone.  Not a big deal, just thought I’d mention it.  Another interesting side note, at least in the installation instructions, there is no requirement to remove 2009 to install 2010.  This is actually quite nice as I’m not ready to just move all my previous work cold turkey to 2010 without some trial work.

I’d be interested in others thoughts as I’m sure so would others on this board.

My first impression of Maya 2010 is that it appears to be exactly the same as Maya 2009.

It’s mostly under-the-hood fixes:

Yep. It’s pretty similar. I think it’s got the shortest ‘what’s new’ list I’ve seen. Launched Matchmover and found that the ability to import .mov and avi files doesn’t exist in the 64 bit edition. Autodesk have logged a bug. So at present with 2010 Maya is almost the same, no bonus tools, no drivers for my spaceball and Matchmover isn’t complete. Think I’ll be hanging on to 2009 for a while. Looks like the mocap isn’t in the visor either.

Just fired up Toxik. I seems ok (on the surface). We use XP 64 Pro so possibly a Vista compatibility problem

Update on MatchMover on a Mac.  It appears all of my issues were related to my graphics card.  That is a surprise as up until now, even Maya never complained.  I had just one of the basic GForce 7300 that the original MacPro’s had.  I just upgraded to a Radeon 4870 and fired up MatchMover (along with Maya .... wow so that is what texture maps look like ... duh) and the issues I had with MatchMover went away.

Heads up to any AD people that may be seeing this.  You might want to pass this on to your tech support people.  If someone has a MacPro with the original GForce GT7300 cards in them MatchMover will not work correct.

Now, on to see if this is also why Maya2010 with OSX 10.5.8 has been crashing like crazy.

I moved over to bootcamp for this release… Maya sadly (would love not to be in a windows enviro) runs so much smoother on a windows platform.. for me anyway. 2009 was crashing at the oddest times for me on MAC… 2010 seems not bad at the moment.

Maybe my Toxik issues are a dual monitor and graphics card issue (MacPro Nvidia 8800)… it makes one on my screens black and both screens flash black each time I press in the viewport.
