Hi, Im a Mac user first of all, I mostly do motion graphics (After effects) and have dabbled with several 3d apps over the years (lightwave, poser, bryce) and a lightweight maya user. Anyway I’ve been to several sites to buy models and I always see some great models made by 3d studio max. I’d really love to use some of these models in Maya with out having to buy a pc (Im on a mac G5 so I cant run boot camp and virtual pc doesn’t cut it for more than simple pc apps) and then having to buy 3d studio max if I just want to use the model format and not the program. so to make a long story short is there any way to import Max models into maya? I mean, they are made by the same company.. is there a stand alone convertor?
Thanks in advance for any feedback on this

Yes the bonus tools has a plug in that allows you to import .3ds models.

many of those sites allow you to purchase models in multiple formats - if available, buy your models in the .3ds format - which maya can import via BonusTools.
FBX or OBJ files would be another file that are compatible between Max and Maya.

If they only have MAX files available, you might try soliciting conversion services with a Max user and go from there…
