How to import 3ds or .max model into Maya 2010?

hi, i have a problem. i need to import 3ds or max models into maya . i dont know how.. i use maya 2010 student edition.

any help would be nice

Export from Max as an .FBX

Export the file to obj and import Max or Maya

If you install bonus tools you can import 3ds files.

.max files are nearly impossible to read directly, as previous posters mentioned - export as fbx from max then bring into maya.
