I started a tutorial for a spine Using the IKSpline tool.
I believe to have done everything exactly as the guy in the tutorial told me to, but apparently I missed out on something :/

Problem is this:
I clustered the curve, ending up with 4 clusters (2 for the chest control, 2 for the hip control). I parent-contrained these to their respective controls. Now I am supposed to use the Advanced twist option of the IKhandle to have him rotate nicely on the y axis (Z and X work fine).
These are the values I used:

World up type:Object Rotation Up (start/end)
Up Axis: Positive Z
Up Vector: 0,0,1
Up vector 2: 0,0,1
World Up object: My hip Control
World up Object2: My chest control
Twist Value Type:Total

But for whatever ungodly reason it just won’t work. Nothing’s rotating on the Y-axis >_<

Another thing, which can be seen on the screenshot I attached, is that for some reason my bones twist up in really weird ways when I enter the values of the tutorial (to fix them, Id have to use 0,1,0 and 0,0,0 - but I am not even sure what exactly those values are for :/) - although my bones have the exact same axis as in the tutorial.

I believe the problem with the rotation might be due to this warning maya spits out when I select the IKHandle:
// Warning: Some items cannot be rotated in the 3D view.

Does that have anyhting to do with it? Cuz I have no idea how to change that, nor do I even know if I’m suspecting the right thing >_>

Thanks so much for your help on this, it’s driving me nuts.

Hi did u tried that upVector1 is 1,0,0 and upVector2 is 1,0,0 or same with negative like -1. keep up axis positive Y
Try it once.

hmm, this seems so familiar…
I remember having the same Problem:
did you watch a tut from Digital Tutors (could also be some other provider) where they was using Maya 2008? I watched one of them, and that didnt work well for me, independet from what I tried.

But there is a much more effective way of making a spine Rig. Check out Digital Tutors, Rigging for Production in Maya 2011. Its a much more complicated way but also really powerful and efficient. If you are not able to see this, I could explain you briefly how to make such a Rig.

kind regards - Adeptus

PS: the Warning from the SplineIK handle has nothing to do with that, its just saying you that you cant move it, because it does not affect your joints. These are tied to the splineCurve. Nothing about that.

Yea it’s DT’S “Next Gen Rigging and Animation” Tutorial.

If you could pm me how to do it, that would be awesome.

But I will try to get my hands on the DT Tut as well, only makes sense to be practicing with a tutorial with one’s own maya version, instead of a 3-year-old one :D

Thanks for you help, much appreciated :)

ah, yes…
well DT doesnt have that much tuts with Maya 2011. 2008 is mostly the same. But there are some awsome changes and adds in the rigging part wich make the rigs much more powerful.
But I learned with the 2008 tuts all the time and they are really helpful.
Its rather late now, I will try to make you a detailed description of the rig tomorrow if theres enough time. But not later than friday. Think its ok for you?

gn8 for now^^
