Ok so I make a custom shader with the maya api, it works with he maya software renderer but not with mental ray.
Why?
Any ideas?
I may be able to make a mental ray shader but I don’t think i will be able to access the maya functions i need such as getting a the closest point on a mesh, or can I?
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I’m running into this problem as well, none of the examples provided by Adsk work with Mental Ray.
It has to be possible, seeing Adsk textures actually do work in MR, so what magic is going on they don’t want to share (seeing this problem was posted over 1.5 years ago, i’m not expecting an answer anytime soon, but you never know.)
