Can someone give me the rundown on the magic needed to get transparency working on an outliner icon for a custom node in linux with maya 2009/2010?

I have a 20x20 index color image with the background pixels set to rgb: 0,254,0.

I’m using GIMP, which may be the issue. If I copy an existing icon and rename it for my node, it works, just with the wrong image.
If I load that icon into GIMP and modify it in any way, save it (I’ve tried numerous options) it loses the transparency.

Any thoughts? (besides to use photoshop on windows?)
What are the requirements for the images and their transparency?

thanks,
Rick_

Make sure that in GIMP, Image > Mode > is RGB. And of course save as xpm. This works for me.

Also make sure you don’t fill the background with color.
