Does anybody know if Maya 2011 will finally have real live symmetry????

Could you be more specific?

well you have to use an instance of one side of your model in order to have symmetry - or use the NEX plugin…

What do you mean by symmetry specifically? Maya already has reflection options in the Tool Settings…

He obviously refers to mirrored operations, such as Extrude and the like.
The answer is no.

I should say that Maya’s approach to symmetry is shame and pain. I know that it is not a trivial task, but why others can do that while off staff cannot?!

I think you’re referring to a feature that works like 3ds Max “Symmetry” modifier.  The problem is that Maya does not have a Modifier Stack, so you can’t (as far as I know) apply symmetry to your model and then “go below the symmetry” and make your edits and see the final result with symmetry applied above in real time.

The closest thing in Maya that I know of is what was mentioned above - using an instance.  But the problem with this method is that you don’t see a true end result.  In 3ds Max, you can see the full mirrored model with welded and smoothed seams.  Maya’s instance doesn’t show the welded and smoothed seams.

Maya’s reflection settings will only work for transforms, and I don’t think will work for cutting, extruding, etc.  The NEX symmetry tools are the closest thing I know of for Maya.

...maybe 2012........................

I’m happy to say there *IS* a symmetry modifier in Maya! I learned about it just now and it’s called the “Mirror Cut” tool, one of the last modifiers under the “MESH” menu. you need to be sure the checkbox next to “merge with original” is unchecked, but for all intents and purposes, it’s what you’re looking for…

Hello guys
Don’t know why are you looking under ‘mesh’ menu in this case? delete one half of your mesh, go to edit>duplicate (or ‘duplicate special’ in new versions) then use instance, set scale to -1, apply. done. symmetry from 3ds max in Maya.

The problem with this approach (and all other approaches in Maya that I’ve seen) is that you still can’t see a true end result.  You still later have to combine the meshes and then weld and smooth the vertices along the seam.  In 3ds Max, you can see the welded and smoothed seam while still working on only one half of the mesh.
