auto-retopotools, kickstand stretchmesh like deformer, simple autorigging tools like CAT are long overdue.
I’d like to see something nobody ever imagined when it comes to 3D apps, like PaintFX. Something that would make the 2012 release unforgettable.

Agreed:) Kinda like when Z brush 4 came out, Completely mind blowing upgrade ... But I think this has to do with the sheer love of working on a program they respect and adore. They delayed it because it wasnt ready, but when it was it blew fans away with new ideas and thinking. I think this is something AD has forgotten about, Im not speaking about the teams working on the software I still think they love their baby, but its about deadlines now and maximising profit, Hence why we are now getting new versions yearly with features not even half as incredible as a good old Alias release.
I guess it would be nice to see AD work harder at beating the competition and release mind blowing updates rather then just buy out the competition and get away with releasing ... Just another Maya release for money sake.
Anyway I love my Maya, Im looking forward to the new release as we deserve something good for the amount we paid for it.
So here is hoping for something AMAZING AD:)

Something I don’t think many people realize is that Autodesk is a publicly traded company, which means their scheduling is in large part driven by the share holders, rather than the developers.
If it were up to Autodesk, we would probably see longer development cycles, with more significant updates in these releases, but unfortunately, the current scheduling means the ‘larger’ feature sets may sometimes take 2-3 cycles before we get to see it, rather than getting something ‘big’ every release.

i know how cool it feels when u have new features.
I just hope maya 2012 wont be all bout that: http://www.cgrecord.net/2011/02/maya-technology-preview.html
Because the priority should be on making things simply WORK, many things are broken an buggy in Maya holding Maya back in the race (specially when compared to the Max Excalibur project), from Mental Ray integration to paint effects to render passes and paint effects, slow and buggy interface, just to name a fiew.
I really hope this version will maya completely robust and ready for production for vfx/animation/gaming/viz (specially for little studios that dont have the in house tools for Maya that makes it capable of delivering productions like Alice in wonderland and Tron).

Hello mate, Although mayas particles are actually extremely powerful, probably one of the more powerful sytems in my opinion, I agree with Implimenting them with the speed and friendliness of particle flow and Thinking particles.
This would really help speed up the workflow,
Another nice long time awaited feature would be real time DOF in viewport.
Fluids are just incredible but its so intensive and when dealing with large scenes of fluid, it becomes near impossible to work with. Faster Fluids would be so welcomed:)
Also speeding up the cache playback with larger scenes of fluid.
Im looking so forward to the new release:)
Good luck lads.

1. Add a transparency sheet over perspective and other orthographic views to allow a director to make comments/suggestions on a pose/animation. Instead of having an expert touch your model, the transparency sheet allows him/her to draw on it to make suggestions for improvements.
a). It should include multi color pencils/markers like sketchbook pro.
b). Keep Image like in Maya Render Window, with slider at bottom, or give a user the choices of “slider bar” or “image superimpose swipe” for comparing the left and right image like in Nuke. Of course there should be a transparency/opacity adjuster
c). Add a comments to the transparency, and a bookmark that pops up an image drawn on the transparency sheet to show at what frame the director wanted a certain pose or animation.
2. Add a search box simply by pressing Tab and then type in whatever tools or command a person wants. Instead of hunting through each top menu and then going down menus after menus to look for “sculpt geometry”.
3. Improvement to Maya’s Fluid to make it like Realflow or Lagoa.
4. Allow curve extraction on Nurbs objects after using Make Live on nurbs. Curve extraction works only on poly objects.
5. Bug fixes to maya ncloth. Transform Constraint acts weird. Maya sometimes selects certain CVs without the user’s selection. Tear Constraint doesn’t behave right too when selection certain CVs to tear.
6. Allow fluid dynamics to interact with ncloth to create cloth on fire
7. Allow easy Mocap import into maya without headaches.

I really like the transparency sheet idea, this would be very handy and solid way to comment on scenes and animation (with animation a series of sketches would be held in the one transparency sheet)

*Add more setup tools for rigging and animation, bidirectionsl constraints, movable pivot, space switching.
*Update dynamics like hair, rigid bodies, fur modules, liquids. Build an Ice like simulation system combined with nucleus.
*Update the hypershade and hypergrapsh to enhance the connection worklike softimage.
*Soup is great.

I will agree with the need of implementing ICE and lagoa stuff in maya.
Also need a better hair, fur support with advanced tools to paint and edit the hair in many ways.
Using renderman everyday it is a big missing stuff in maya and shave is too limited.
we need a solid viewport 2 with everything supported in it and not only working on big cards.
open the rendering part to be accessible to others renderer and not just MR, by the way kill maya software.
rebuild the hypershade entirely to be faster and better.
add a new painting tool. for texture and for geometry.
add new paintfx capability like houdini L-system.
debug everything, the main issue with maya are the bugs, someone are really annoying in a every day basis.
that’s all for now but Ithink I’m late maya 2012 is going to be release soon…
